What style of writing should be submitted?
There aren't any strict restrictions or limits on
the writing style that you should use for your travel
article. First person narratives are preferred, however
our only wish is that we hope you would refrain from
using the objective and impartial approaches of mainstream
travel guidebooks.
Write with the perspective of the reader in mind.
It should be entertaining enough so that the reader
can empathize with your experience and informative
enough to make the reader interested in the place
that you're talking about. Don't simply tell us what
you saw with a bland list of facts about the area;
leave that to the travel guides. Tell us about a funny
story or unique experience that you had while you
were traveling in the area. Let your creativity run
wild – put the curious reader in your shoes
and take them to the destination in your writing!
"I think the first duty of all art, including
fiction of any kind, is to entertain. That is to
say, to hold interest. No matter how worthy the
message of something, if it's dull, you're just
not communicating."
-Poul Anderson
"One writes out of one thing only--one's
own experience. Everything depends on how relentlessly
one forces from the experience the last drop, sweet
or bitter, it can possibly give."
- James Baldwin
What sort of writing experience is required?
If you are a seasoned professional travel writer
or simply an avid traveler with a passion for writing
then we would like to read your story. You don't have
to be a published writer, but we do ask that you take
your writing seriously and follow our submission guidelines.
As long as your writing style matches what we're looking
for and your story takes place in the designated geographical
area, then we will accept your work, providing it
doesn't need too much editing.
What geographical regions can be included?
As long as your travel article resides anywhere in
"The Orient" then we will accept it. Here
is a brief list of the countries that are currently
defined as being a part of the region:
Brunei
Cambodia
China
East Timor
Hong Kong
Indonesia
Japan
North Korea
South Korea
Laos
Macau
Malaysia

What format should be used?
Microsoft Word Documents are preferred. If you wish
to submit your travel article in a simple email then
that is fine as well.
How long should the travel article be?
Each travel article should be approximately 500 to
2,000 words.
Can pictures be included with the travel article?
Yes. We encourage all writers to submit photos along
with their story to highlight their experience. Feel
free to submit up to 3 pictures per story. We ask
that you please be sure that your photos are not too
large when emailing your documents - under approximately
100KB per image is ideal.
What additional information should be provided?
In an email, with your travel article and images
attached, please provide us with the following information:
1. Your Name
2. Story Title
3. Story Location (Country)
4. Your Contact Information
Is there any compensation for submitted articles?
At the moment, we do not compensate writers for the
travel articles that they submit, as the Ezine is
just launching. However, all contributors will be
able to showcase their work and gain online exposure.
OrientalTales.com will provide each writer with a
section of web space where they can include a short
author biography, photo, and any contact information
or links that they wish.
