Sharon is author of seven guidebooks and won Travel Writer of the Year in 2002 from North American Travel Journalists. In 2009, Society of American Travel Writers awarded Sharon "Honorable Mention
for Best Newspaper Travel Features."

Vendors in minuscule outdoor booths call out in Mandarin and English, enticing me with their glittering jewelry, boom boxes, and lady's lingerie. Hungry shoppers eye whole chicken heads and squid tentacles sizzling on blackened grills. Tourists and local couples, students, and businessmen throng thepungent smoky streets, searching for bargains among acres of Rolex knock offs, 'Chanel' handbags, and 'Gucci' scarves. A wizened shopkeeper plucks a wriggling 3-foot snake from its wire cage, squeezing its blood and bile into a metal cup, for a 'snake cocktail'. Which is stronger, my horror or fascination? I'm not sure.

In my fantasy, I am Keeper of the Royal Elephants for his Majesty, The King of Thailand.
"Bring me a female White Elephant," my King commands. "Sacred and rare, they're not easily found. I hear they are charmed by purple orchids."
"Your Majesty," I stammer, "In all my years as your Royal Elephant Keeper, I have never captured a White Elephant. Wherever shall I look?"
"The Mae Sa Valley," he smiles. "She will be bathing in a shady river. Delight her with purple orchids, then deliver her to me in secret. A most special surprise for the Queen's birthday!
